Hello World! It's Nice to Meet You!
Hello! My name is Cheryl Bougie and if you haven't read my blog before, I'm so glad that you found me. Today, I want to tell you about the five things to never ever put on your face. But first I want to introduce myself in case you do not know me. I'm Cheryl Bougie. I'm a wife. I'm a mom of two teenage boys. I am a South Florida native, and
I am here to help moms live more and stress less.
I want to help you find all the shortcuts to mom life and life in general, because we as women have so much on our plate already. We don't need any extra stress, right?
Fountain of Youth - Where are You Hiding?
We are all trying to do the best we can, buy the best skin care, use all the fancy tools to look younger, stay younger, have great skin, but sometimes we're using things without even knowing them that are not good for our skin. And today I'm going to share with you five things that you should never put on your face, or your skin for that matter.

You Put What Where?
Today I want to talk to you about your skin. I want to tell you five things that you're never, ever, ever going to put on your skin again, right? Right. And I'm going to tell you why. And you might be surprised at some of these. You might know some of these, but some might surprise you.
Some Like It Hot
The first one, which really surprised me, is hot water. This one is a struggle for me as I love a hot, hot shower or bath, just like the next person.
When it comes to washing, your face especially, hot water is a no-go.
Really, a hot shower is not the best thing for any body part, but especially for your face. You should wash your face in lukewarm, tepid water.
Hot water strips all of the moisture out of your skin. It can leave it dry, inflamed, red, itchy, peeling, especially in those winter months when our skin is already dry due to exposure to the elements. When it's cold, that's when we want to use hot water the most but that's when you definitely should not use it. So start trying to turn your water a little bit cooler and use lukewarm water to wash your face.
Which Deserves a Longer Shelf Life? Your Cosmetics or Your Health?
Number two is parabens. I don't know if you know much about parabens but I encourage you to research what they are. Parabens are in a lot of skincare and beauty products and they're not good for you. I don't know if you knew this, but...
about 60% of what you put on your skin gets absorbed into your bloodstream.
So all of these things that we're putting on our skin, not just our face, but on our skin as a whole, are getting absorbed into our body. So we really need to be careful.
The jury is still out as to whether parabens cause cancer, but they are definitely a hormone disruptor. They're used as a preservative in a lot of cosmetics and skin care, and they mimic estrogen in our body. That's why they're considered a possible carcinogen, because estrogen can lead to breast cancer in women. They can lead to fertility issues, depression, birth defects or other issues. There are a lot of scary things associated with parabens, so it's really not worth the risk. It is better for your skin and your overall health to use only skin care and makeup that do not contain parabens.
Take the Suds Out of Your Soak
Another no-no on the ingredients list is sulfates. Sulfates are what make your shampoo, face wash and body wash all foamy and bubbly. But they're not necessary. We can do that with other things, or we do without those bubbles. Basically, sulfates are like a degreaser. They strip moisture out of your skin leaving us to pile on moisturizing products. That seems counterproductive to me.
Sulfates are linked to lipid damage and can cause eczema, psoriasis, and premature aging. Wait, what? That's exactly what we're trying to prevent, right? No more dry skin for us.
Try to find products without sulfates.
Wait...I can Find Petroleum Where?
Number four, try to keep track here, is petroleum products. I know you guys have all heard about slugging. I know that your grandma told you to use Vaseline to take off your eye makeup. I get it. And guess what? It does really remove some eye makeup, but Vaseline is made from the bottom, jelly-like, crude oil, toxic sludge on the bottom of barrels.
Now, certain products, like Vaseline, are very refined. Some others however are additives to our skincare or makeup and we don't know exactly how refined they are or if they have any impurities in them.
These additives can be really harmful and can cause irritation and rashes.
Also, it is not water-soluble so when you're putting it on your face, you're basically sealing everything in that's already on there. If you're just washing your face and then putting it on, that's one thing, but most of the time we are putting the stuff from our hands onto our face as well. Then we seal that all in with petroleum products. Ew. It can also soak into your pores and build up on your skin, smothering it so that it cannot breathe. So as much as you might think that it's hydrating, it's really not. It's just locking in the moisture, and there are other non-petroleum products that can do that.
And as far as your makeup and your skincare and body products go, there's so many other alternatives as this one is not adding any benefits. So do not use petroleum products in your skincare or your makeup.
I Smell Pretty...but Boy Does that ITCH!
The last thing, which is really a no-no in my book for sure, is fragrances. I don't think they're good and they're definitely not necessary.
I'm talking about synthetic fragrances only.
Obviously, everything in nature and a lot of things made chemically have a smell, have a fragrance to them, but I am talking about artificial and synthetic fragrances added to your skincare products and to your makeup products.
They can cause a lot of allergic reactions.
They can cause rashes, they can cause hives, red, itchiness, things that we just... Why would we need to do that just for a product to smell good?
Now, we all know we like a lotion that smells great. We want our hair to smell great - all of that stuff -but it can be done with more natural fragrances. Even with those, you're going to need to really be careful, because any additive scent can be an allergen for people, especially those with sensitive skin.
If you have any kind of sensitive skin, you want to look for fragrance-free options. If you don't have super sensitive skin, you can look for naturally fragranced options and that would be a better choice for you.
There you have it! 5 Things to Never Put on Your Face.
