Stop lipstick bleed and get younger looking lips
Wrinkles around the mouth, thinning & drying lips can wreak havoc on our lippy! Here’s 6 lipstick tips for older women to get that younger looking pout.
6 Lipstick Tips For Older Women
As you get older, your lips begin to get thinner and wrinkled with fine lines around the edges. You can resort to injections or botox for smooth & plump lips. Why though? There are many affordable lipstick tips for older women to keep your lips looking great. You can have more youthful lips and especially avoid that awful lipstick bleed. Here’s how to achieve that natural, youthful plump pout when you’re over 40.
Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate
If your lips are dry and flaky, your lipstick is not going to stay put and it will just settle into all of the lines and dead skin. One of my favorite lipstick tips for older women is exfoliating. It reveals new skin on your lips and they will be able to accept any moisturizing treatments better after being exfoliated. You can accomplish this with a dry toothbrush rubbed over them, or using a sugar scrub. There are many fabulous ones out on the market or you can opt for a homemade one off of Pinterest as well.
Hydrate and Plump
After you’ve got your freshly exfoliated lips, you’ll want to nourish them. You can use a lip oil, lip balm or even coconut oil. Avoid any products containing petroleum as this can actually work against the hydration. A lipstick trick for older women that I found is to apply a hydrating lip plumper and give that time to work while I apply the rest of my makeup.
Choosing the Right Lipstick Color
All of the best lipstick tricks for older women in the world won’t help if you’ve got the wrong color. Finding the best lipstick color to look younger isn’t an impossible task but it comes with lots of trial and errors. Every skin complexion and tone is different. What lip color may look good on your lips might look quite the opposite one another. Here’s some suggestions but experiment to see what truly works best for you.
Fair skin: bright lip colors including mauves, bright pinks, peach and coral shades will give you a younger look
Golden skin tones: rich caramels, browns and tulip shades will brign otu the subtle glow for a more youthful look. Be careful not to go too bold as this can actually make you look older
Olive skin tones: orange based and coral shades really bring out the warmth in this skin tone and peach shades will compliment it beautifully
Dark skin tones: be careful with the bold shades of color as these can actually make your lips look thinner. If you do want to go bold, opt for magenta or a raspberry which can make your lips look full and youthful
Lastly, choose carefully when deciding between matte and glossy. While matte lipsticks can be all the rage right now, it can be very drying to your lips. It also will settle into every single last line and wrinkle, even the ones you didn’t know you had. If you fall in love with a matte lipstick, add a clear or similar shade gloss over top.
Line Those Lips Babe
Applying lip liner is one of the single most effective lipstick tricks to prevent your lipstick from bleeding out onto those little annoying lines around your mouth. You can choose a liner that matches your lipstick or one that matches your skin tone. A few companies make clear lip liners for those that don’t love lip liner to begin with. You want to line just outside your natural lip. If you are trying to make your lips appear larger, you can go just a little further outside the lip as well.
Time to Apply Your Lipstick
This is an easy one. Just glide on your lipstick being careful not to go outside of the liner edges. This is where sometimes a liquid lipstick will adhere better than a gloss. Remember, you can always apply a gloss over top to smooth out any lines and moisturize your lips.
Outline Your Lips with Concealer
If you want to highlight your lips so they stand out more (great for thin lips) or make sure there’s absolutely no way this lipstick is going to bleed, then use a very small brush and outline your lips with concealer.
